Great to see that professional golf is kicking off properly again today with the Charles Schwab Challenge on the PGA Tour! It looks like a great field as well which should be good for the TV ratings!
It’s going to be interesting to see the scoring….. how has the lay-off affected the best in the world? I saw a comment by Jon Rahm to the effect that all he was trying to do when he was back on the range was to avoid shanking the first seven shots he hit……! I reckon many of us can identify with that!
I know most of the top players have an internal range set up with simulators at their homes which supposedly gives them an accurate feedback on shots hit – but I still feel there’s no substitute for actually watching the ball fly. I’ve been hitting balls into a net during the lockdown and, although the feel of the strike on the face has been predominantly better than I would have expected (!!!), I could be hitting straight right, straight left…… I have no idea!!! Problem is, maybe I’ve now ingrained a move that causes a bad ball flight and it could take weeks to get rid of it!!! Could the top players be affected by something similar? It’s going to be interesting to see!
At least they are getting to play – unlike amateur golf elsewhere which in some cases is still under lockdown, as are some of the lesser Pro Tours. Sad actually – the players at the Charles Schwab are predominantly those for whom a layoff had almost zero financial effect while many pros on the smaller tours are scraping by at the best of times…..
Still – at least it’s a step back to normality!
