There’s No Remarks Column!

It’s been too long since I posted something…

I have some excuses….. upshot is the last nine months have ended in a small change….. of continent…..!

Back to the important stuff!

As with most Covid related issues things are settling down – we’re accepting things we believe we cannot change and doing what is required by governments all over the world to one extent or another. It looks as though golf is now able to be played in most parts of the planet – and let’s hope it stay that way! Can’t think of a better sport to allow social distancing and fresh air!

It’s good to see that the Tours have been doing their best to make sure we get to see some great golf – not least Hideki Matsuyama’s solid Masters win… which is likely to cause a shortage of Srixon golf clubs world wide as the likely golf explosion in the East and particularly Japan will take up all their stock!! There was great golf played throughout the tournament – good finishes for Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth (whose recovery of his game is a pleasure to see), Will Zalatoris and Robert MacIntyre on debut….. and how many of us could empathise with Zander on the 16th?

Interesting for me though was that these three didn’t make the weekend.

Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy

Dustin Johnson. After a comfortable record-breaking win of the revised Masters towards the end of last year when course conditions were un-Masters like – softer and more holding that during the usual April – he appeared to really struggle with a firm and fast golf course. I haven’t checked the stats to back my next comment up but I think he’s struggling on the greens. I watched him win in Saudi Arabia and saw then that if his putter had merely been ice cold he would have lapped the field……. a cold putter is NOT what you need at Augusta!

Lee Westwood… although I know from experience how awesome it is to have your kids involved in the game, I felt that for a Major, when he is on good run of form and still has the mental and physical skills to win as he showed on the European Tour last year, you go in with absolutely the best set up you can. And for me, with Lee, that meant having Helen on the bag. She keeps him relaxed and knows what to say and when to say it. She is his secret weapon… and I would say you need every weapon you have if you want to win a Major!

As for Rory….. I though he was smarter than that! He already has a magnificent swing that moves the ball plenty far enough but to let Bryson get to him…… really??!! We all know what happens when you try to hit the ball too hard….. His disruption of his natural rhythm and timing in an attempt to match Bryson is going to take him a long time to undo. My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that had he focussed on improving his scoring (which he can still do easily, starting with his putting – or more accurately I believe, his green reading) rather than his distance, he would have been able to get much closer to the Green Jacket he needs than just a weak missed cut.

You see – THERE IS NO REMARKS COLUMN ON A SCORECARD…!!

Jose Maria Olazabal makes the cut at the Master with a LONGEST drive of around 270 yards…..

Byson is half his age, hits it at least 50 metres further all the time – and yet only beat Jose Maria by three shots overall…..

Don’t forget – at the end of the round there is only one question asked and one answer that matters.
