My story

What makes this page any different to the thousands of other golf pages out there?

Simple – probably nothing!

So why bother?

Because I’m a golf lover.

And – because I love the game as much as I do I want to try and help others to get more enjoyment out of this fantastic game.

Why?

There was a very well respected American teaching professional called Harvey Penick. He coached in Texas and had among his pupils Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw, both Major winners. He wrote a number of excellent books but the one title in particular sums up my feeling about the game and those who play it.

The book is called “And If you Play Golf, You’re My Friend”

So, if I can help a friend by putting down here something that brings a smile, or an “ah-ha” moment or just gives you an interesting read – then great!

What makes me think I can do this? Madness maybe……!

My name is Greg. I’m an amateur golfer. I’ve been playing for over forty years, I’m useful but not spectacular and I’ve had the odd representative golf game at regional level. Work has dictated that for most of my life I haven’t played much more than weekend golf. Not what I wanted to do…… but after discovering golf in my last year at High School my passion for the game ignited.

My parents had their plans for my future….. I was enrolled at University for a Commerce course but the first thing I did on campus was join the Varsity Golf Club…..

I failed my first year VERY badly but reduced my handicap to single figures…..! The Faculty wrote to my parents recommending that they did not re-enrol me – which upset my father no end as he had been footing the bills! After tearing a strip off me for my lack of effort he asked me what did I want to do with my life.

I told him I wanted to play golf…… and was informed flatly that I had no chance of him allowing that to happen as nobody made money out of sport……..!!!! Another career path was therefore chosen for me in the family business.

Nevertheless that idea of being part of the golf world stuck. I subsequently spent many years on golf club and golf union committees, involved myself in charitable golfing organisations, played league, and played as often as I could. Family came along and I was blessed with three sporting boys who all took up the game. I helped them all with the basics, coached them when they asked – and ended up with two who have become PGA registered teaching professionals and one who, despite being only a weekend golfer like his Dad, has twice been Club Champion at his home club.

Then came two exciting years. My youngest, already a PGA Pro, was offered a sponsorship to play on Tour and as I had been his only coach up to that point he asked me to help him prepare and to caddie for him. An awesome roller coaster ensued – great highs, big lows as well – but between us we learnt so much about the golf swing, course management and the mental pressures playing golf at that level can create.

He was just getting the point of being competitive when sadly his very generous sponsor suddenly became ill and passed away a short time later. To continue without sponsorship was impossible so it was back to being a club pro for him and the family business for me……

However, because of what he experienced while he was playing – and, as he insists, by teaching the way I taught him, he has become a highly sought after teaching Pro – and keeps asking me why I’m not writing a book so that others can benefit.

But – the book idea frightens me more than a 200 metre carry over water!!!

So this is a compromise – bite size bits of golf! Maybe a swing thought, a mental tip, a discussion of current golf affairs or whatever…

I just hope it adds to your enjoyment of a game that I believe is without equal!
